A brilliant place for everyone and perfect for long summer days where you just want to be outside! Take a blanket, picnic, games, swimming stuff, walking boots, a bbq…..the choices are endless!
Bellever is managed by the Forestry Commission and is found very close to Postbridge. The easiest route from Exeter is to take the B3212 from Moretonhampstead to Postbridge and follow the signs from there. When you reach Bellever, do not park in the first small car park but follow the signs for the YHA to the main, large car park. There are charges to park, but the toilets are free.
You can access the river very close to the car park, which makes this a perfect spot if you have family members who are less mobile or need a wheelchair, There are flat, clear areas close to the river so that everyone can join in the fun.
The river is shallow and fairly safe, with lots of easy entry and exit points – perfect for paddling and cooling off. There are also crossing points with stepping stones as well as the pretty stone bridge a bit further along. The river bed is stony and it is worth bringing sandals or old shoes that can be worn in to protect little feet and make paddling more comfortable.
It’s a great place to exercise dogs – as well as lots of longer walks available through the forest and up the Tor, swimming for balls and from bank to bank wears them out quickly too!
