A fantastic community run pool that is open all summer! Moretonhampstead is a dartmoor town about 30 minutes drive from Exeter – you can follow the B3212 out of St Thomas, or take the A30 to Whiddon Down. The swimming pool is close to the centre of the town, well signposted, and has a pay and display car park with lots of room.
Prices are really reasonable and under 4′s are free. There is a big main pool with the shallow end sectioned off and a separate toddler pool to the side. Lots of toys and floats are available for public use for free.
There are picnic tables, benches, chairs and grassy areas where you can sit and watch older children, enjoy the sunshine to warm up after a swim, or have a snack and a drink. There is a shop selling food and drink (including hot drinks), with pick n mix sweets that you can trade your wristband in for after a swim!
The changing areas hare basic but clean and spacious, with separate and family cubicles, toilets and seating areas. There are no showers yet but plans are in place for the future. There are no lockers – a basket system is available for clothes and belongings can be kept closer to the pool if you wish to keep them in sight.
Moretonhampstead itself has a wide variety of shops, including a butchers/deli, green grocers and co-op for picnic supplies, along with cafes and pubs for more substantial snacks and meals. It’s all within walking distance of the pool so easy to leave your car and have a wander. If you have children or dogs looking to run off more energy then the park behind the church is a brilliant space, with new play equipment and large fields with breathtaking views of the moor.
