Booked on a whim, my children declared our night at Penzance YHA as ‘the best holiday ever!’ I had seen an advert for a flash sale on YHA accommodation and decided to see if we could do a last minute flit to Cornwall for one night. With member discounts and in the sale, we paid less than £40 for a night’s glamping with cooked breakfast included!
When we arrived at the Youth Hostel, we checked in and were given lots of handy information for our stay. We had a good explore and couldn’t believe our luck! The hostel is clean and well decorated and furnished, with loads of space inside and out. As we were camping we had the benefit of being able to use all the facilities in the main hostel as well as a handy toilet/shower/kitchen block in the camping field. The main building offered a comfy sitting room, a self catering kitchen, showers, toilets and a cafe.
The camping field had loads of space in which the children could run and play, as well as a campfire corner, ready for use. Perfection!
We ate dinner in the hostel’s cafe, where children eat for free with paying adults, (and alcohol is served!) The menu is limited but suitable for all and the food was absolutely delicious. Clearly freshly cooked with good quality ingredients, the veggie lasagne was worth the drive alone.
We made use of the campfire for marshmallows and bedtime stories after dinner, before making the very short journey to our tent for bed.
The futons were surprisingly cosy and comfy and we felt snug and warm despite the rain outside. Breakfast was a busy affair due to the large numbers of students staying in the hostel, but we were made to feel welcome and the children loved the people watching that came free with our stay!
