The Raptor Trail, Haldon

Following on from our visit to The Mamhead Trail we branched out again today, discovering another new walk route at Haldon.

I had arranged to meet a friend at Haldon Belvedere – a beautiful monument that you can visit on certain summer Sundays – the tower can be seen from miles around. There is no car park but a muddy layby provides spaces for a few cars when the tower is not hosting functions.

From here we followed the signposted footpath to join The Raptor Trail – a surfaced and signed track that would be suitable for bikes and sturdy buggies (it’s very muddy at the moment). The route wasn’t completely flat but there were no difficult climbs or slippery slopes.

As it is a lesser used route than some of the others, we were able to really enjoy the peace of the forest and appreciate the beautiful views as we went round.

The route took us through the main car park and conveniently to The Ridge Cafe, where we stopped to enjoy cake (for lunch!) and a coffee to warm us up. The toilets and rangers’ office are also here.

We continued on the route through a slightly busier section of the woods before completing loop back at the Belvedere.

This was a great route for a good stretch of the legs so perfectnfor dogs that need a real run, while offering plenty of opportunities to rest, refresh and enjoy the surroundings!
