Hembury Hill Fort is an amazingly historic site of ancient settlements situated above Honiton in the Blackdown Hills AONB. It is a wonderfully peaceful place full of wildlife and with incredible views out over the surrounding countryside.
While there is access directly from the main Honiton to Cullompton road, this entrance is both hair-raising to get in and out of but also currently subject to tree felling and management works. There is a safer and calmer way to access the site from the car park at Witness Moor Woodlands, and then cross the road to the information board at the top of the fort.
There are tracks and trails through the area with deep ditches and steep ramparts to be explored. The views are breathtaking and it is a brilliant place to listen to birdsong and catch glimpses of an array of wildlife. There is a definite feeling of the past at the site, nd it is not hard to see why is was such a popular defensive settlement for so many chapters of our history.
