Owned and managed by South West Lakes Trust, Trenchford, Tottiford and Kennick Reservoirs are hidden away on Dartmoor but easily reached from the A38. If you leave the main road at Chudleigh Knighton and follow signs to Hennock, the road will take you higher onto the moor in the direction of Moretonhampstead.
The main car park (grid reference SX804823) for the lakes is well signed and obvious – there’s no danger of driving past. Parking is pay and display with plenty of space.
There is a toilet block and small picnic area on a deck overlooking the lake – this makes it a good spot to head to for a picnic, even if you don’t intend to walk.
There is a useful board with suggested routes around the lakes and information on available activities and local wildlife.
It is not difficult to navigate your way around the lakeside paths. However some are narrow, overgrown or uneven so unsuitable for wheels or pushchairs. (There are shorter sections on surfaced lanes and onto the dam between Trenchford and Tottiford that are easygoing for buggies, as long as you don’t mind an ‘out and back’ walk.)
For longer walks, you can link up with local public footpaths to head into Tottiford Woods and explore away from the water.
The views from all directions are just stunning, and it is worth visiting in different seasons and different times of day to see the changing light on the water.
