The River Otter is definitely on our leader board because it has just so many perfect paddling places! This peach of a spot in Newton Poppleford ticks a lot of ‘summer days’ boxes.
Parking is near to the river and free. There are 2 car parks on Back Lane in Newton Poppleford. One close to the play area and one next to the Pavilion. It is easy to walk between the 2 via the playing field and gates show you the way.
The play area is well equipped and maintained and has a good range of activities to suit a spread of ages. There are also accessible swings for those who need them. There are beaches to snack on bins provided.
To access the best paddling point on the river here, cross the road opposite the play area. There is a large noticeboard that marks the right gate to use.
Follow the path across the meadow to your left, aiming for the orange life ring that should hove into view. In front of the buoy you will find a stony beach area and shallow water suitable for paddling.
It is possible to access deeper pools from here too if desired, heading upstream round the bend is a good tip but obviously water levels are subject to change.
Further downstream there are benches in the shade and the large river meadow is great for running around to warm up after a dip, or for ball games and picnics.
If you wish to link up to a longer walk then head back to the play park before taking the footpath directly odd the bend in the road. This will take you upstream to Harpford, Tipton and Ottery St Mary. This links in with another of our walks taking in Harpford Woods.
